Level 10 · Lesson 9

持续体:着
The durative 着

着不说事情发生了,只说样子还在:门开着,墙上挂着一张画。

着 does not report an event — it holds up a state and says it is still there.

你已经会了 · You already know this

从第四级起你就会说“我拿着词典”“门上挂着我的帽子”“你今天穿着新衣服”。这三句话有一个共同点:它们都不告诉你发生了什么事,只告诉你现在是什么样子。门开了说的是一个变化,门开着说的是一幅画面。着标记的这种“样子还在”,语法书叫持续体。

You have been saying 我拿着词典, 门上挂着我的帽子 and 你今天穿着新衣服 since level 4. All three have one thing in common: none of them tells you what happened, only what things look like now. 门开了 reports a change; 门开着 paints a picture. That 'it is still like that' is what grammarians call 持续体, the durative aspect.

规则 · The rules

着是动态助词,跟在动词后边,表示状态在持续。
规则 1
门开着。他站着。我拿着词典。
着 follows its verb and says that the state it names is still in place.

着回答的问题是“现在是什么样子”,不是“发生了什么”。所以它是静态的:门开着,你可以照一张相;门开了,你只能说出一个变化。否定用没(有),着不去掉:墙上没挂着画。还要注意读音——这里的着读轻声 zhe;睡着了的着读 zháo,是另一个词。

着 answers 'what does it look like now', never 'what happened'. It is 静态 — a state you could photograph. Negate with 没(有) and keep the 着: 墙上没挂着画. Watch the reading too: this 着 is neutral-tone zhe, while the 着 of 睡着了 is zháo, a different word entirely.

能带着的多是姿势和存在一类的动词:站、坐、躺、拿、穿、挂、放、开;一下子就结束的动作不能带着。
规则 2
他坐着看书。她穿着一件黑色的大衣。不说“他到着”“他结束着”。
着 wants verbs that can last — postures and states of affairs. Verbs that finish in an instant reject it.

道理很简单:只有能持续下去的事,才谈得上“还在持续”。站、坐、躺、拿、穿、挂、放、开都能持续,所以它们最爱带着。到、结束这样的动词一发生就完了,没有中间的一段可以指,所以不能带着。是、有、知道、喜欢本身就是状态,也不需要着。

The logic is simple: only something that can go on can be said to be still going on. 站, 坐, 躺, 拿, 穿, 挂, 放 and 开 all last, so they take 着 happily. 到 and 结束 are over the moment they happen — there is no middle stretch to point at — so they refuse it. And 是, 有, 知道, 喜欢 are already states, so they need nothing added.

处所词 + 动词 + 着 + 名词:说那个地方有什么,后边的名词是新东西。
规则 3
墙上挂着一张画。桌子上放着两本书。门口站着一个人。
Place word, verb with 着, then the thing: this pattern introduces something new at a location.

这个格式的顺序是固定的:地方在前,东西在后。后边的名词一般是听话人还不知道的,所以说一张画、两本书、一个人,不说那张画。要是那张画已经知道了,就换一个说法:那张画挂在墙上。同一幅画面,从地方说起,还是从东西说起,句子就不一样。

The order is fixed: place first, thing last. The thing is normally news to the listener, which is why it comes out as 一张画, 两本书, 一个人 and not 那张画. If the picture is already known, you turn the sentence round: 那张画挂在墙上. Same wall, same picture — but starting from the place or from the object gives you two different sentences.

动词1 + 着 + 动词2:前一个动作是后一个动作的方式,这叫伴随。
规则 4
他笑着说。我们站着吃饭。她听着音乐做作业。
Verb-着 plus a second verb: the first names the manner or the state that accompanies the second.

这里的主要动作是后边那个:他笑着说,说的是话,笑只是说话时的样子。位置不能换——笑着说和说着笑不是一件事。这个格式在口语里非常常见:站着吃饭、拿着书进来、听着音乐做作业。

The real action is the second verb: in 他笑着说 what he does is speak, and the smiling is only the look on his face while he does it. The order carries the meaning — 笑着说 and 说着笑 are not the same event. This pattern is everywhere in speech: 站着吃饭, 拿着书进来, 听着音乐做作业.
