Level 12 · Lesson 9

修辞
Rhetoric

比喻、排比、对偶、夸张——第六级的成语和谚语,靠的就是这四种手法。

The four devices behind the chengyu and proverbs you already quote: simile, parallelism, antithesis, hyperbole.

你已经会了 · You already know this

第六级你背过“活到老,学到老”“百闻不如一见”“竹篮打水——一场空”,也说过“马马虎虎”“一心一意”。这些话为什么好记、好用?不是因为词特别,而是因为它们的形状特别:有的两半对得整整齐齐,有的三句排在一起,有的拿一样东西比另一样东西。给这些形状起名字,就叫修辞。

You memorised 活到老,学到老 and 百闻不如一见 in level 6, and you use 马马虎虎 and 一心一意 without thinking. What makes them stick is not the words but the shape: two halves matched exactly, or three clauses in a row, or one thing described through another. Naming those shapes is 修辞, rhetoric.

规则 · The rules

比喻是拿一样东西说另一样东西,常用像…一样、好像,或者直接用是。
规则 1
他跑得像风一样快。时间就是金钱。
A simile with 像…一样 keeps the two things apart; 是 collapses them into one and hits harder.

比喻有两头:被说的那样东西,和用来说它的那样东西。用像、好像的时候,两头都在句子里,听的人一看就明白这是打比方;用是的时候,中间的桥拆掉了,语气就重得多。第六级的歇后语几乎都是比喻:竹篮打水,说的其实不是竹篮。

A 比喻 has two ends: the thing talked about and the thing it is talked about through. 像 and 好像 leave both ends visible, so nobody mistakes it for a fact; 是 pulls the bridge away and the claim lands much harder. The xiehouyu of level 6 are nearly all 比喻 — 竹篮打水 is not really about baskets.

排比是三个或者三个以上结构相同的部分排在一起,一句比一句有力。
规则 2
他不怕苦,不怕累,不怕难。
Three matching clauses build pressure that one clause cannot; two is not yet enough.

排比的条件很简单:结构要一样,数量要够三个。少于三个只是并列,读起来平平常常;到了三个,句子自己就有了节奏,听的人会跟着往下等。写文章想强调什么,最省力的办法就是把它说成排比。

Two conditions only: identical structure, and at least three of them. Two matching parts are mere coordination; at three the sentence acquires a beat and the listener leans forward waiting for the next one. To emphasise something in writing, the cheapest device is to say it three times in the same shape.

对偶是两个字数相同、结构相当的部分对在一起,前后成双。
规则 3
活到老,学到老。前人栽树,后人乘凉。
Two halves of equal length, matched word class for word class — the standard shape of a Chinese proverb.

对偶只要两半,可是要求比排比严:字数要相等,词类要相当。前人对后人,栽树对乘凉,一个字也不多,一个字也不少。中国的对联、谚语、诗句都建在这个规矩上,所以谚语听一遍就记住了。

对偶 needs only two halves, but its demands are stricter than 排比's: equal syllable count and matching word classes. 前人 answers 后人, 栽树 answers 乘凉, not a character over or under. Couplets, proverbs and classical verse all rest on this, which is why a 谚语 sticks after one hearing.

夸张是故意把话说大或者说小,为的是让人印象深,不是为了骗人。
规则 4
他饿得能吃下一头牛。度日如年。
Nobody eats an ox and no day lasts a year; the listener knows, and that is exactly why it works.

夸张要说得大家都知道不是真的,这样才安全。他饿得能吃下一头牛,用的是你第五级学的程度补语;度日如年是四个字的成语,说的是日子太难熬。要是夸得让人分不清真假,那就不是修辞,是说错话了。

Exaggeration must be obviously untrue — that is what keeps it honest. 他饿得能吃下一头牛 rides on the degree complement you learned in level 5; 度日如年 packs the same move into four characters. If the hearer cannot tell it is exaggeration, it stops being 修辞 and becomes a false statement.

汉语爱四个字一组:两个字加两个字,读起来平衡,所以成语几乎都是四个字。
规则 5
马马虎虎、一心一意、乱七八糟
Four characters split two-and-two is the default rhythm of emphatic Chinese.

为什么成语是四个字,不是三个、五个?因为汉语的节奏喜欢两个字一拍,四个字正好两拍,前后还能对起来:马马对虎虎,一心对一意。你写句子的时候,结尾放一个四字格,整句话立刻显得稳。

Why four characters and not three or five? Because Chinese counts rhythm in two-syllable beats: four characters make two clean beats, and the halves can be matched against each other. Ending a sentence on a four-character phrase is the quickest way to make it sound settled.

一步一步 · Step by step

从一句话到排比
  1. 他不怕苦。 — 一个分句,平平常常
  2. 他不怕苦,不怕累,不怕难。 — 结构相同的部分排到三个:这就是排比,气势出来了
给一个比喻加力气
  1. 他跑得很快。 — 程度补语,只说事实
  2. 他跑得像风一样快。 — 像 + 风 + 一样:两头都在,是明喻
  3. 他跑起来就是一阵风。 — 用是,桥拆掉,语气最重

练习 · Practice

“他不怕苦,不怕累,不怕难”用的是哪一种修辞? Which device is this?
“前人栽树,后人乘凉”是哪一种? And this one?
“他饿得能吃下一头牛”,这种故意说大的说法叫______。 Name the device: nobody really eats an ox.
四种修辞 Match each device to what it does.
