Level 10 · Lesson 16

连动句和兼语句
Serial-verb and pivotal sentences

一个主语,两个动词,按事情的次序说下去;要是中间那个词一身两职,就是兼语句。

One subject, two verbs, in the order things happen — and when the middle noun does double duty, the sentence is pivotal.

你已经会了 · You already know this

第二级你就说“我去商店买东西”,第四级你说“我坐地铁去上班”,第五级你说“妈妈让我休息一下”。这三句里都有两个动词,中间没有“和”,也没有“然后”,可是谁也没听错。汉语靠的是次序:先发生的先说,后发生的后说。今天要分清楚的是,这两个动词是共用一个主语,还是当中夹着一个一身两职的词。

You have said 我去商店买东西 since level 2, 我坐地铁去上班 since level 4, 妈妈让我休息一下 since level 5. Each has two verbs with no 和 and no 然后 between them, and nobody misunderstands: Chinese relies on order, first thing first. What today sorts out is whether those two verbs share one subject, or whether a noun sits between them doing two jobs at once.

规则 · The rules

一个主语后边接着说两个或者更多动词短语,中间不用连词,这样的句子叫连动句。
规则 1
我去商店买东西。他坐地铁去上班。我用筷子吃饭。
One subject, two verb phrases, nothing joining them.

要看清楚一点:主语只有一个,而且两个动词说的是同一个人做的事。“我去商店买东西”里,去的是我,买的也是我。这跟第九级说的并列不一样——并列可以加“和”,连动句加不进去:说“我去商店和买东西”,中国人不这么说。

Look closely: there is exactly one subject, and both verbs report what that same person does. In 我去商店买东西 the goer and the buyer are both 我. This is not coordination — you can put 和 between two coordinate items, but never between the verbs of a 连动句.

连动句的次序就是事情的次序:第一个动词常常说方式或者工具,第二个动词常常说目的。
规则 2
我去图书馆借书(去是方式,借书是目的)。他坐地铁去上班(坐地铁是方式)。
Order equals sequence; verb 1 is often the means, verb 2 the purpose.

次序不能换:“我买东西去商店”跟原句不是一个意思,一般也不说。否定词和能愿动词都放在第一个动词前边——我不去商店买东西、我要去图书馆借书、他没坐地铁去上班。“了”正好相反,它跟着最后一个动词走:我昨天去商店买了东西。

The order cannot be swapped. Negation and modal verbs both stand before the FIRST verb — 我不去商店买东西, 我要去图书馆借书, 他没坐地铁去上班. 了 does the opposite: it follows the last verb, 我昨天去商店买了东西.

前一个动词的宾语,同时又是后一个动词的主语,这样的句子叫兼语句;当中那个词叫兼语。
规则 3
他请我吃饭。老师叫我念一遍。妈妈让我休息一下。
The object of verb 1 turns around and becomes the subject of verb 2.

兼语句当中那个词,往前看是宾语,往后看是主语,所以叫“兼语”。它跟连动句最大的分别就在这儿:连动句从头到尾只有一个人在做事,兼语句里有两个人——“他请我吃饭”,请的是他,吃的是我。否定词和能愿动词还是放在第一个动词前边:他没请我吃饭、他想请我吃饭。

The middle word of a pivotal sentence is an object when you look left and a subject when you look right — hence the name 兼语, the double-duty word. That is also the sharpest difference from a serial-verb sentence: there one person does everything, here there are two — in 他请我吃饭 he invites and I eat. Negation and modal verbs still stand before the first verb.

常做兼语句第一个动词的有“请、让、叫、使”;“使”是书面的说法,后边多半跟着一种感受或者变化。
规则 4
这个消息使大家都很高兴。(口语说:这个消息让大家都很高兴。)
请, 让, 叫 and 使 head most pivotal sentences; 使 belongs to writing and usually introduces a feeling or a change.

分辨两种句子只要问一句话:当中那个词是谁的?“我去商店买东西”里,“商店”是“去”的宾语,可它不会买东西,所以不是兼语,这是连动句。“他请我吃饭”里,“我”被请,又去吃饭,一身两职,这才是兼语句。还有一种常见的兼语句用“有”开头:有一个人找你——“一个人”是“有”的宾语,也是“找”的主语。

One question tells the two apart: whose is the middle word? In 我去商店买东西 the shop is the object of 去, but a shop cannot buy things, so it is no pivot — serial verb. In 他请我吃饭 the 我 is invited and also eats: two jobs, one word, pivotal. A common pivotal type opens with 有: 有一个人找你, where 一个人 is the object of 有 and the subject of 找.

一步一步 · Step by step
