Level 12 · Lesson 7

省略和篇章
Ellipsis and discourse

上下文给得出的,汉语就不说;句子之间靠“这”“那”和重复接起来。

Chinese drops whatever the context supplies — subject, object, even the whole predicate — and carries the thread with 这, 那 and plain repetition.

你已经会了 · You already know this

第一级里有人问你“你吃饭了吗”,你回答“吃了”。两个字,主语“我”没说,宾语“饭”也没说,可是谁都听得懂。“他去哪儿了?”——“去图书馆了。”“你要茶还是咖啡?”——“咖啡。”这不是偷懒,这是汉语的规矩:上下文已经给出来的东西,再说一遍反而奇怪。今天给这件事起个名字——省略。

Back in level 1 someone asked 你吃饭了吗 and you answered 吃了 — two syllables, with the subject 我 and the object 饭 both missing, and nobody was confused. 他去哪儿了? 去图书馆了。 你要茶还是咖啡? 咖啡。 This is not laziness; it is the rule. What the context has already supplied sounds strange when repeated. Its name is 省略.

规则 · The rules

上下文里已经清楚的成分可以省略,主语、宾语都可以省,有时候整个谓语也省。
规则 1
——你吃饭了吗? ——吃了。 · ——你要茶还是咖啡? ——咖啡。
吃了 drops both 我 and 饭; 咖啡 drops the entire predicate 我要.

英语每个句子都要有主语,实在没有也要放一个假主语;汉语不用。省略的条件只有一个:听的人补得回来。补不回来就不能省——“看见了”如果前面没提过东西,听的人就得问“看见什么了”。所以省略不是省字,是省已经说过的话。

English insists on a subject and will invent an 'it' to have one; Chinese does not. There is a single condition on ellipsis: the listener must be able to put the missing piece back. 看见了 with nothing mentioned beforehand simply invites the question 看见什么了. You are not saving syllables — you are declining to repeat yourself.

承前省略:后面的几个分句跟前面用同一个主语时,主语只在第一个分句里出现一次。
规则 2
他走进屋子,坐下,喝了一杯茶。 · 我起床,洗脸,就去上班了。
One 他 governs three clauses. Repeating it in each would sound clumsy, not clearer.

讲故事的时候这一条最有用:主语说一次,后面一直管着,直到换人为止。换了人就要说出来——“他走进屋子,我给他倒了一杯茶”,这里的“我”不能省。汉语的代词用得比英语少得多,一个段落里“他”出现三四次就已经不少了。

This is the rule that carries a narrative: name the subject once and it holds until somebody else takes over. When somebody does, say so — in 他走进屋子,我给他倒了一杯茶 the 我 cannot be dropped. Chinese uses far fewer pronouns than English; three or four 他 in one paragraph is already a lot.

“这”指刚说过的、近的,“那”指远一点的;“这”还可以指代前面一整句话。
规则 3
我买了一本词典,这本词典很有用。 · 他昨天没来上班,这让大家很奇怪。
In the second sentence 这 stands for the whole preceding clause — 它 could never do that.

要注意:“它”只能指一件具体的东西,不能指一整句话,也很少在口语里当宾语用。英语用一个词把两件事都做了,汉语要分开:具体的东西用“这本书”“那件事”,或者干脆重复那个名词;整件事情用“这”。重复名词在汉语里不算笨,反而清楚。

Take care with 它: it points at one concrete thing, never at a whole statement, and it is rare as a spoken object. English 'it' does both jobs; Chinese splits them. For a thing, say 这本书, 那件事, or simply repeat the noun; for a whole situation, say 这. Repeating the noun is not clumsy in Chinese — it reads as clear.

句子和句子之间靠承接词语连成篇章,常用“于是”“然后”“后来”“接着”“因此”。
规则 4
天太晚了。于是我们回家了。后来他给我打了个电话。
These words work between sentences, where a 关联词语 works between clauses inside one.

复句的关联词语管的是一个句子里的两个分句,承接词语管的是两个句子之间的关系——这就是从句子走到篇章。一个段落里,主语省着,“这”指着,“于是”“后来”接着,读的人就跟得上。汉语的连贯靠这三样东西,不靠时态,因为汉语根本没有时态。

A 关联词语 joins two clauses inside one sentence; a 承接词语 joins two sentences — and that step is the step from grammar to discourse. Within a paragraph the subject stays dropped, 这 keeps pointing, 于是 and 后来 keep the order, and the reader follows. Chinese cohesion rests on these three devices and never on tense, because there is no tense to rest on.

一步一步 · Step by step

Practice

——你吃饭了吗? ——______ Which answer sounds most natural?
他昨天没来上班,______让大家很奇怪。 What points back at the whole first clause?
我买了一本词典,______本词典很有用。 Fill in the demonstrative that points at what you just mentioned.
排一排,主语只说一次。 Arrange: 'He walked into the room, sat down, and drank a cup of tea.'
每个词说的是什么? Match each term to its job.
