Level 9 · Lesson 4

主语、宾语、定语
Subject, object, attributive

词类说的是一个词是什么,成分说的是它在句子里站在哪儿。

A word class says what a word is; a 成分 says where it stands — and in Chinese, where decides everything.

你已经会了 · You already know this

“老师问学生”和“学生问老师”,用的是同样的三个词,意思却完全相反。汉语的名词不换样子,所以它是谁、做什么,全看它站在动词的哪一边。你说了六级的汉语,一次也没有站错过。现在给这些位置起名字。

老师问学生 and 学生问老师 use the same three words and mean opposite things. A Chinese noun never changes shape, so who is doing what depends entirely on which side of the verb the noun stands. You spoke six levels of Chinese without once standing a noun in the wrong place. Now those places get their names.

规则 · The rules

词类说的是一个词属于哪一类,成分说的是它在句子里占哪个位置。
规则 1
“书”永远是名词,可是它可以做主语,也可以做宾语。
Word class is what a word is; 成分 is the job it is doing in this particular sentence. Do not confuse the two.

一个词的类不会变:“书”在哪儿都是名词。可是它的成分句句都可能不同——“书很有意思”里它是主语,“我买书”里它是宾语。类是它带在身上的,成分是句子给它的。

A word's class travels with it: 书 is a noun wherever it goes. Its 成分 changes from sentence to sentence — subject in 书很有意思, object in 我买书. The class belongs to the word; the 成分 is handed to it by the sentence.

主语在动词前边,宾语在动词后边——汉语靠位置分主语和宾语。
规则 2
老师问学生。/学生问老师。
Before the verb: subject. After the verb: object. Nothing else marks them.

别的语言用词尾告诉你谁是主语,汉语用位置。所以汉语的语序不是习惯,是语法本身:一动位置,意思就跟着动。

Other languages put an ending on the noun to tell you which one is the subject. Chinese uses position instead. Word order here is therefore not a habit but the grammar itself: move a noun and the meaning moves with it.

在名词前边说明它的成分叫定语,被说明的那个名词叫中心语。
规则 3
我的书:“我的”是定语,“书”是中心语。
The modifier in front is the 定语; the noun it leans on is the 中心语, the head.

汉语的定语永远在中心语前边,一个例外也没有:红色的花、三本书、我买的书。英语可以说 the book I bought,把说明的部分放在后边;汉语只能说“我买的书”。

A Chinese 定语 always precedes its head, without exception: 红色的花, 三本书, 我买的书. English can hang the modifier behind the noun — the book I bought — but Chinese can only put it in front: 我买的书.

定语和中心语中间常常有“的”。
规则 4
我的书、老师的车、红色的花;中国人、我妈妈不用“的”。
的 is the usual seam between modifier and head — though some pairs are tight enough to do without it. Lesson 15 of this level sorts out which.

“的”就是定语和中心语中间的那道缝:关系松,缝就看得见(老师的车、我买的书);关系紧,缝就不见了(我妈妈、中国人、汉语老师)。现在只要记住“的”出现在哪儿,第十五课再讲什么时候一定要、什么时候一定不要。

的 is the seam between a modifier and its head. Loose join, and the seam shows: 老师的车, 我买的书. Tight join, and it disappears: 我妈妈, 中国人, 汉语老师. For now simply notice where 的 turns up; lesson 15 of this level decides when it is compulsory and when it is wrong.

一步一步 · Step by step
