Li Ming, you're late today.
Sorry. I'm late because the traffic was bad.
It's fine. Were you stuck for long?
Forty minutes. There were a lot of cars because it rained today.
I see. The rain is the cause, the jam is the result.
Right. Since I don't want to be late again, tomorrow I'm leaving at six thirty.
Then you should get up a bit earlier.
Because I have to be up early tomorrow, I'll go to bed early tonight.

Explanation

English makes you choose: either 'because it was jammed, I was late' or 'it was jammed, so I was late'. Never both. Chinese keeps both halves, and that is the full, normal shape of the sentence — 因为 opens the cause, 所以 opens the result. Nothing is doubled and nothing is redundant. Note the order too: the cause comes first, the result second, which is the order Chinese prefers for almost every pair of clauses.

Either half can also stand on its own. Put the 因为 clause second when the cause is an afterthought — very common in speech. Drop 因为 and keep only 所以 when the cause is already obvious to both of you. The one thing you cannot do is swap them: 所以 never opens the cause, and 因为 never opens the result.

因为 also takes a plain noun, not only a clause: 因为你, 因为天气, 因为工作. And the same relation has two nouns of its own. 原因 is the reason — A 的原因是 B tells you what lies behind A. 结果 is what came out of it. Both count with 个: 一个原因, 一个结果.

Use it

Say three sentences aloud, each with both halves. One about today: why you did or did not go somewhere. One about your study: why you are learning Chinese. . Then say the last one again with the cause moved to the back — 我…,因为明天… — and hear how it turns into an afterthought.
