我喝茶。我吃饭。
The verb chooses its object. 喝 hē takes liquids and nothing else — 喝水, 喝茶, 喝咖啡, 喝牛奶, 喝果汁. Anything you chew belongs to 吃: 吃饭, 吃菜, 吃肉. English lets 'have' cover both; Chinese makes you pick, and picking wrong is heard at once. Learn each new food or drink together with the verb that goes in front of it.
你喝茶吗？我不喝茶。你喝什么？
Two old friends now working on an action verb. 吗 sits at the very end and turns any statement into a yes-no question, changing nothing else. 不 stands immediately in front of the verb: 不喝, 不吃, 不是. Watch the tones — 不 is bù before 喝 and 吃, but bú before a falling tone, as in 不是 bú shì and 不错 bú cuò. And a question either names a thing to confirm or leaves a hole to fill, never both: 你喝茶吗？ offers tea, 你喝什么？ leaves the object open, and you never hang 吗 on the end of a question that already contains 什么.
